Johannes Franciscus Gijsbertus van den Berg, known  better as Johfra Bosschart or simply JOHFRA, was a  modern visionary artist.  He was born in Holland in  1919 but in 1964 moved to the Dordogne region of  France with his partner, and later wife, the renowned artist Ellen Lórien.  In 1973 he was commissioned to do a series of  posters on the Zodiac and perhaps these more than  anything else have brought his work to a global  audience.  Johfra described his works as: "Surrealism based on studies of psychology,  religion, the Bible, astrology, antiquity, magic,  witchcraft, mythology and occultism."  Johfra's last years were his most productive and he  was creating one painting a month.  However, at the  end of May 1998, with cancer spreading through his  body, he completed his final canvas entitled 'The  Journey Home'.  He confided in his journal “I cannot  paint anymore...”  Sadly Johfra died on the morning  of 6 November 1998 at the age of 78.  Madame  Lórien still lives at their home in France.  © Johfra © Johfra © 2011-2012 Starcards.biz  Strictly no copying or reproduction without permission.
